Coronary heart disease remains the major cause of death and debilitation in the U.S. More than 58 million Americans have some form of coronary heart disease, with almost 1.4 million dying annually. Many of these deaths are preventable. As the population ages, coronary heart disease will likely affect even more people. Heart disease is not just a threat to the elderly. Forty-five percent of all heart attacks occur in people who are under the age of 65. It is important for everyone to understand that people whose risk factors may not be very high account for the vast majority of sudden cardiac deaths.
